Things in the basement

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Another fun book by Ben Hatke. This one has the feared basement and a young brother looking a lost sock of his baby sister. It starts out to look like a usual basement that becomes a museum, a castle, a cave inhabited with interesting creatures. One is a very large translucent green jelly-like monster with people and things inside him that show through. It reminded me a lot of "No Face" in Miyazaki's Spirited Away. There were also very cute little mushrooms that were constantly cleaning and working around the floor. The sock is finally found. No spoilers on that. A very fun story and not terribly scary.

Currently I'm working on a graphic novel about 5 siblings who were moved from their first family to foster care and then most were adopted. Because of this, when they grew up they searched and found each other again. There were many ways their paths had crossed when they were young, and finally they had family again. It's a story based on real life, with both stressful and happy times and successful lives in spite of these challenges.
