Review of The Broken Kingdom: Episode One

The Broken Kingdom: Episode One: Arthur’s Bane by Angus Donald

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I wanted to read this because I was interested in the format. Donald is releasing this story in episodes that are about 20,000 words, or 70 pages. After four or five episodes, he’s compiling them into Book I of what I believe is going to be a trilogy.

I was immediately drawn into the story. It’s a fresh take on the Arthurian legends that mixes a real feeling and lived in historic sub-Roman Britain with elements of medieval fantasy. Donald has a very visual way of writing that really takes you there. I found the introduction of the dragon to be spine-tingling and breathtaking.

Episode One: Arthur’s Bane is a great setup for what seems to be a rollicking adventure. We meet the characters, get some background, and then everything goes to hell. The episode has its own story told in five chapters but definitely leaves you wanting more. I’m downloading Episode Two as soon as I finish writing this.

This episodic method of delivery is nothing new. Many of my favorite novels from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were written as series that appeared in the papers and were later compiled as novels. The writing in these are usually fast-paced leaving the reader pining for more so that they buy the next issue. Donald’s story is this way too.

I’ve heard some complain that they don’t want to wait for the next episode. For me, that’s part of the appeal. I plan to read Episode Two quickly so I can enjoy the anticipation of Episode Three. Those who don’t like to wait in between can read the novel when it comes out instead.

I think this is a brilliant business plan. Donald can make some money on the episodes as he writes the series, then make more when the books come out. I’m going to be watching with great interest to see how this goes. You should too! Get on board and read Episode One today!
