[Name Redacted] My old DM's favorite setting was Planescape (whereas I'm a Ravenloft or Dark Sun kinda guy) and our years-long campaign was built around the idea that various powerful Elementals had gathered together to covertly build a world and prove to the cosmos that it wasn't that hard -- then they each sponsored adventurers to represent their interests and as a team gather (ie: steal or recruit) from throughout the planes certain vital elements (a sun & a moon, soil, sentient races, plant-life, etc.). But once the world was "built" the PCs would occasionally be dispatched back down as emissaries of "the makers" to deal with problems (infestations, civil conflict, invaders). And all too often, our adventures brought us through Sigil. Fun stuff!
