The inanimate object

Sometimes on Wednesday nights, I join an online writing session--you know the type of thing: everyone introduces themselves, then settles down for X amount of time for writing, then comes back together to chat about it. Usually, along with the introductions, there's some kind of icebreaker question...

CW! You are about to enter the realm of petty, competitive thoughts and resentments!  )

CarolineFromConcord Interesting. Never heard of a group like this. Would not do for me. Don't liike the feeling of competition.

I was playing it up for the story, but I don't think the people in the group were feeling competitive--I think that was all in me. And the truth is that at the same time that I was feeling competitive, I was also interested in the things people said.

But yeah, I don't know that I like icebreaker questions very much. I'm happy enough just to hear what people say without an icebreaker question.

I hasten also to add that the main point of getting together wasn't for the icebreaker, it was to write together--which also might not do it for you (totally understandable)--but I just don't want you to come away from the story thinking that the icebreaker was the main point.
