System Collapse: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
SecUnit, aka Murderbot, is back, in the seventh installment of Martha Wells’ excellent and intriguing science-fiction series about a sentient security cyborg who has managed to hack his (its?) governing module, and is learning what it’s like to be human.
SecUnit is a complex personality, grumpy much of the time, fairly cynical, depressed on occasion, and quite perceptive. SecUnit is also addicted to trashy soap operas like Sanctuary Moon, which often plays in the background of his operating system as he goes about inflicting violence on various bad people.
Unless you’ve read one or two of the previous books in this series you may not understand some of what goes on here, in a story involving stranded colonists on a planet who are about to be enslaved by a ruthless corporation. Having some background would also help you understand a bit more about SecUnit’s decidedly quirky personality, which seems to be evolving with each book.
