KC Campbell on Handling Stressful Situations

Fantastic reminders and lessons learned from friend and fellow pilot, KC Campbell

When we hit turbulence in an airplane, were taught to use consistent, smooth, and steady control inputs. If theres an emergency, were taught to focus on whats most important first and to remain calm and composed under pressure.

When we face a stressful situation in our life, these same concepts apply . . . we need to have a balanced and steady response while focusing on whats most important. So, what happens when we take the wrong approach and what can we do to adjust?

Overreacting to turbulence. If were heavy-handed and take the wrong action, we can exacerbate the problem.

Take a deep breath. Take the time to assess the situation, and then take the appropriate action.

Ignoring the turbulence and assuming you dont have to adapt.

Ensure you are not so overly committed to your current approach that you dont adjust when necessary.

Losing sight of whats most important. We have unfortunately seen several aircraft accidents as a result of being overly focused on the immediate problem, and nobody actually focused on flying the airplane.

Not everyone on the team can be focused on the immediate problem or difficulty, some still need to ensure they are looking down the road at whats ahead.

When faced with chaos, crisis, or turbulence in your life, take a deep breath, focus on whats most important . . . Maintain control. Analyze the situation. Take the proper action. And then debrief your actions so you can do it better the next time.
