The Secret of Dorian Gray
Just finished watching "The Secret of Dorian Gray" released by Raro Video.
Perhaps the most controversial of the big silver screen adaptations of Oscar Wilde's classic and for it's time - extremely scandalous Gothic novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray," this 1970 sexplotation movie that is a joint English and Italian film is also perhaps the most faithful visual adaptation of Wilde's gay themed novel. Keep in mind that the original novel was heavily, heavily edited before it was first published.
Italian film director Massimo Dallamano choose openly bi-sexual actor Helmut Berger for the role of Dorian Gray - and keep in mind that during the 1970s, Europe was a bit more liberal in it's acceptance and tolerance of gay men and women then the United States.
Perhaps the most faithful adaptation of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is the full cast Big Finish audio production. Though never say never, AMC could decide to do a limited mini-series.
"The Secret of Dorian Gray" is set in the modern era, at least for the time it was made, 1970s and rather brilliantly follows Dorian's descent into what was considered for the era - sexual depravity. And it slightly changes the ending of the original novel by showing Dorian killing himself and not dying by attempting to destroy the painting.
Strongly recommended.
Five Stars.
