An imperfect world
The Mageriverse was intentionally written to be an imperfect one. The Breeds were at war with one another for eons. Some kept others in bondage. And just as in human history, many Breeds did not give women equal power.
Changes often come about with each new generation. But in the Breed world, semi and full immortals can live for hundreds if not thousands of years. They cling to their ways. Not all, of course.
You can see in the books how it is often the newly-made immortals or young ones who push back on the flawed system. Who question it. Because they have all been at war for so long, they have only recently formed a system of law that governs each Breed differently. Because they live in secret from humans, they are limited in power. They cannot build endless jails to punish, so many crimes that are considered lower on the scale are gone unpunished. They might have to surrender land or wealth or provide reparations.
I love the idea of Crossbreeds. Because the Breed world has been at war with each other, they have separated themselves. They fear extinction of their own kind. Many Breeds have gone extinct. Many Shifter animals types have phased out. I pair couples together who are different animal types of breeds to show their journey and even the challenges they face.
Some are unfairly mistreated or shunned in my world. If you see that and empathize with the character, I have done my job. Each character has their own unique journey that isn't always about their Breed type but may just be a personal or emotional struggle they must overcome.
Every series is about found family. Every single one. People with different backgrounds, cultures, and of different paranormal types coming together as family. Even Hunter being part of Keystone was a learning experience for each member. That they needed to accept who he was and his personal journey. The goal was never to change him or "fix him", only make it so the others in the house were given the right tools to help them learn how to interact and communicate with him in a way that Hunter wanted.
The Breed world in many ways is behind the human one. Humans tend to fantasize that if immortals existed, they would have a perfect system. Older people tend to cling to what is familiar to them. This even shows in many immortals' reluctance to accept technology.
When a couple feels scorn from restaurant patrons because they are an interbred couple, I want readers to see how unfair and wrong that is. I want readers to feel angry that queer characters of a breeding supernatural type are looked down upon by their own kind because they're somehow not contributing to keeping the species alive. Readers should feel the unjustness of there being social classes among Breeds. Readers should feel upset when someone is mistreated because they don't have the right eye color or have defective Mage gifts. And if anything, I want to show just how special and wonderful those characters are. Readers should see that everyone's journey is different. Some characters can't have children. Others don't want them. That's why I, as the author, never push kids on my charters.
Most of all, I want my characters to keep pushing back, to be their authentic self and continue their pursuit of love and family.
Thank you for reading my stories. I put so much time and love into crafting each one that I hope they are books you want to revisit. Some are urban fantasy and focus more on the heroes journey and action. Others are paranormal romance and meant to focus on the couple's journey. Whether it's happy tears or wanting to fling the book across the room, I hope every book makes you feel something and walk away with a better perspective on the diverse world around us.
Happy reading!
