EXCERPT

Charlotte took a deep breath while examining Hannibal. Her eyes scanned him top to bottom. He felt the way he did in the airport when they put him in the chamber and told him to raise his arms overhead. Was she staring into his eyes, or wondering about his dark glasses?

Were his black suit and white shirt inappropriate for the season?

“Ben told me that you were very good at finding people,” Charlotte said. “And that you were trustworthy and above all discreet.”

“Yeah, and he probably figured you’d be more comfortable with a black investigator.”

She grinned. “Yes, there is that. You wear those shades all the time?”

“Unless I’m asked not to.”

“Well then, would you mind?” She leaned in. He removed his sunglasses and slipped them into his suit jacket pocket. She leaned even closer.

“Blue? No, I think hazel eyes,” she said. “Where’d you get them?”

“You’d have to talk to my parents about that.”

Q & A With …

Tell us about you as a person.
I’m a Black man retired from the American Army and a civilian career as a public affairs specialist for the Defense Department. I have 14 mystery and thriller novels in print with two more written that haven’t been placed with a publisher yet. I read mostly the genres I write in and love a good action movie. I write every fiction every day but like my protagonists I revere the truth in all things.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
I would spend the day with actor Shemar Moore. It would give me 24 hours to talk him into portraying my fictional private detective Hannibal Jones in a TV series.

What’s the story behind your latest book?
In Subtle Felonies, a famous retired basketball player goes missing and his family hires Private Eye Hannibal jones to find him. While trying to figure out of the missing man is a runaway, lost or kidnapped Hannibal learns that the family has a number of hangers-on, some left over from the professional athlete days, and some may have a motive for doing the man hard.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their latest book?
If you can afford it, I recommend you hire an experienced publicist. Also maintain a daily presence on social media and identify those people who are willing to talk your book up. Stay close to those superfans and reward them with early readings and swag to keep them interested. Word of mouth is always the best way to get the word out.
