Weekly Update – October 17, 2023
One of the common questions people ask writers is: where do you get your ideas?
I personally question any writer who gives some lengthy, pretentious answer that ventures into what I refer to as hippie-dippie woo-woo territory. “I like to sit on park benches on sunny days and observe the people around me. I wonder who they are, what drives them, what their hopes and dreams are…I consider myself a student of the human condition and I use mankind itself as my muse.”
Stop. STAAAHHHP.
Most writers I know when asked that question will just sort of shrug. I know I do. I have no clue where my ideas come from. My brain is a weird and mysterious place. I don’t understand half the things it does, from generating story ideas to making me remember some minor embarrassing incident from my distant past at two in the morning when I just want to sleep, goddammit.
This is all a lengthy preface for this: there will be a new short story included with book eight of The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot. The idea hit me out of nowhere at work last week, but I liked it both as a short on its own and as a setup for what’s coming after the core S&L series ends — which won’t be a for a few years yet, but it will be nice to have some foundation set for when I do pursue the follow-up project.
