I don't understand why authors go around to promote books in person. With the internet we get information faster and more complete than ever. And, with the pandemic which everyone pretends is over but is not over, I just have a personal preference for every author whose book series I read to stay alive and very healthy.
We can agree to disagree that the pandemic is more or less over, Diana (at least where I am!), but at the end of the day, screens do not even come close in quality to real human interaction—which is why you would go to see an author in the first place, not to get information about the book you can find online. I certainly also want my favorite authors to stay well (best wishes, Martha, for your speedy recovery!), but I trust that they know their limits better than I do, and can make adult decisions about what they are comfortable with. In-person events are also the best way to get your books signed, to make sure your favorite author gets your letter/gift (if they're comfortable receiving them!), and--I imagine--a pretty substantial morale boost for the author. It's fine if you don't like them, but lots of us do!
