Binary Samurai

In the grim future of 1999… When civilization collapsed, the Net went offline while most people were still plugged in, and the minds of these many millions were trapped. These lost souls are scattered across this fallen world, encoded onto harddrives now called Nodes. All that remains of humanity are the Otaku, who are desperate scavengers that worship technology, and the Samurai, who are wasteland warriors that serve their masters with savage devotion. A psychotic warlord known as Demagogue has ordered his android Shinigami enforcer and his loyal samurai to claim the Nodes, and is building a network hellscape over which he rules as a digital god. In the face of this oppression Otaku prophets preach about a ghost in the machine, a spirit of hope and resistance, the Kami of Wires. The Otaku hide. The Samurai hunt. The Spirit rises.

More than a decade ago a handful of indie filmmakers set out to create an arthouse cyberpunk feature, shot amongst the ruins of the Buffalo Rust Belt, with a vision of “the wasteland meets the digital” in a love letter to the cyborg/scifi/apoc films of the 90s from our spiritual mentors like Albert Pyun, Richard Stanley, Philip J. Roth, Christian Duguay, and Tony Maylam. We knew before we started that financing for this movie would be impossible, and so we shot this for personal favors and pizza. Then for the next 12+ years, we powered through debilitating disease, mechanical failures, and all the usual obstacles until we finally nickel & dimed our way across the post-production finish line in no small way thanks to Max Seiler, Damian Rodriguez, and our friends at Arrow Media Services.

We have been working with our distribution partners and have secured streaming positions in several places, and I wanted to share. If ever there was a project made for the sake of art and the craft, this would be it. Fair warning, this is hardcore retro genre fare and arthouse AF, but we are all proud as hell of the blood, sweat, and tears put into this, and are excited to see it reach an audience at last.

Last, but not least, we would like to give our thanks to one of the scene stealing supporting actors in the film… Christopher N. Wagner, 1979-2023… who passed away before we could finish the project. To our knowledge this was his first and last feature film role, and we were honored to be able to share this adventure with him for the time he was with us.
