Historical Highlight for October 1, 2023

Historical Highlight for October 1, 2023 Tie a Yellow Ribbonthe Anthem for Vietnam Vets – here’s a short historical fact from the history of the Vietnam war and the POW experience shared in the new ‘Captured by Love’ book:

Early in 1973, just as we were coming home, the song Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree by Tony Orlando and Dawn, became the number one hit in the US. It became the top-selling single of the year. Billboard ranked it as the 37th biggest song of all time! This touching love song became a heartwarming anthem for returning Vietnam soldiers, our families, and our nation.

As long-term POWs, we never imagined how much of Americas attention had been focused on us over the years. But we were about to learn. As my parents were driving me home from the Atlanta airport, the closer we got to our home the more I saw yellow ribbons on trees, buildings, fences, and posts. I asked them what that was about. They explainedand I was deeply touched. It was very uplifting, and to be honored this way brought healingsomething that was denied to most Vietnam veterans. It is tragic that our brothers-in-arms were largely scorned and disrespected by so many.

You cannot imagine the impact this song had on the POWs who had been locked up away from our homes and familiesour wives or girlfriends or fiances. But in the stories we have collected in this book, you can see why this song became Our Song for so many loving couples.

We POWs still have a strong bond with Tony. He attends our reunions and inspires us. At our 25th reunion, Mary and I were on a bus loaded with POWs and wives about to shuttle back to the hotelthen Tony climbed aboard. When the group saw him at the front several people called out Sing it for us! And as we were riding the bus through the streets of Dallas, Tony stood up front and sang it! And we all joined in. That was exhilarating and a special memory for a lifetime.

Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree

Im comin home, Ive done my time
Now Ive got to know what is and isnt mine
If you received my letter telling you Id soon be free
Then youll know just what to do
If you still want me, if you still want me

Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree
Its been three long years, do you still want me?
If I dont see a ribbon round the ole oak tree
Ill stay on the bus, forget about us, put the blame on me
If I dont see a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree

Bus driver, please look for me
Cause I couldnt bear to see what I might see
Im really still in prison and my love, she holds the key
A simple yellow ribbons what I need to set me free
And I wrote and told her please

Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree
Its been three long years, do you still want me?
If I dont see a ribbon round the ole oak tree
Ill stay on the bus, forget about us, put the blame on me
If I dont see a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree

Now the whole damned bus is cheerin
And I cant believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons round the ole oak tree

Im comin home
Tie a ribbon round the ole oak tree
Tie a ribbon round the ole oak tree
Tie a ribbon round the ole oak tree
Tie a ribbon round the ole oak tree
