Book Review: The Murder List by Hank Phillipi Ryan

Published in 2019. Mystery. Rachel North attends Harvard Law and will intern for the summer with Martha Gardiner, assistant district attorney for Middlesex County. Rachel is an older student, having graduated from college years before with a short career working in the officer of the State Senate President. No sooner than she’s selected to replace the woman in the top position in the office when a jury summons arrives. She answers the call and is placed on a jury determining the fate of Deacon Davis. For the defense is Jack Kirkland and for the prosecution, Martha Gardiner. Rachel keeps up with the office through Danielle Zander, a new hire, whom she had only days to train. After the jury votes to convict the defendant, Rachel heads back to work, back to the job she loves, when she receives a letter from Jack Kirkland, the attorney in the trial, who wants to meet her. During their meeting, she receives a phone call from the office, telling her about the death of Danielle Zander.

Very interesting read with a big twist at the end, so stay tuned. I almost quit early on, not because of the story, but because of the way it was written. The early chapters had a section called: Before. And it gave me a story that happened six years ago. I couldn’t tell if it was related or not, but it was the same main character, but I found it disrupted the flow of the story. I read on, anyway. Eventually, it did come together in quite a conclusion.

The author has written several other mysteries, so I’ll keep a lookout for them.
