Seasons Change but Can We?
Hi and Welcome to the A & J PEI Treasures E Jean Simpson Author Blog Post and Podcast. I’m your host, Jean coming to you from the beautiful Province of Prince Edward Island, Canada!! The blog post and podcast is an opinion piece and only reflects this author’s opinion and not that of any other entity. I hold no designations in politics, economics or medicine. I am retired from the mental health field. I am a humanitarian and speak from that viewpoint only. Whether you agree with me or not, at least I hope it makes you think. This week, since it is going to be the first week of school, I am discussing change and its implications. If you want to find out more, then stay tuned…!
I’ve never had children of my own. I once thought I would, but it never materialized. So, much of my understanding of children comes from cousins, my own childhood and being educated. The one thing I always knew was that, from being a child, if you give a child your time and love, they will have far less opportunity to get into difficulties and they tend to come to you with problems, happy thoughts and many other magical things. So, as the start of the school season begins, I urge parents to find time to be with their kids. Spend some time with them. Even as a child, my busy working Mother would make sure that we each got special time alone with her. I would help with the dishes and we would have talks then. She would spend another time with my sibling. We both got some of her time no matter how busy she was. Sometimes she would read to us both at night and sometimes to the whole family when we were kids. Did I mention she also took courses toward a degree as training requirements started to change while she was teaching? So, I knew from that, spending time with your kids was paramount and she managed it all. I knew she loved me and him and if I had something I didn’t know how to deal with, I could ask her. That is the first lesson of family dynamic I learned.
As Henry Cloud has suggested, “Everything has seasons, and we have to be able to recognize when something's time has passed and be able to move into the next season. Everything that is alive requires pruning as well, which is a great metaphor for endings.” This is an amazing metaphor for a lot of what is going on in today’s world. With all the intolerance, hate, murder and reliance on a flawed system it seems that no one can agree on what laws to implement. With the tendency to go back and forth depending on the political party in power at any given time, we are sorely in need of understanding that there is from the quote above, “something’s time has passed” and we need to “be able to move on to the next season.” From what I have seen in the news, it is impossible to continue the way things are going. There is too much corruption and too much politics being used to score political points using law. Law and justice should be separate from the voting and the political system. However, it appears that most authorities somewhat disagree with this idea or see it in a different light.
Some authorities assume the stance that Rule of Law “If considered not solely an instrument of the government but as a rule to which the entire society, including the government, is bound, the rule of law is fundamental in advancing democracy.” https://www.un.org/en/chronicle/artic... . Further, The Rule of Law is supposed to lift law above politics whereas “Rule by law, in contrast, connotes the instrumental use of law as a tool of political power” https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/ru.... This in itself is a very important distinction. Currently, it seems we have still been seeing it as something to use as a tool of political power rather than the theoretically perfect use of it to advance democracy. It currently feels like it is being weaponized. So, in that way, we need to find some way to separate the political power from the Rule OF Law rather than using Rule BY law.
The weaponization of Law by politics is very visible in much of US politics and many other countries as well. There are some theoretical glitches with this concept because unfortunately, Governments change. Often the change instituted by one Government is often clawed back by another. Then there are laws that are intended for the public good which are defeated as well based on political agendas. Because I’m Canadian, I will use an example from Canada. In Canada alone, we have a PM that talks about tolerance and weaponizing intolerance for political gain (https://ca.style.yahoo.com/trudeau-sa...) while Provincially Governments have been trying to institute restrictive covenants on the protection of LGBTQ2S+ youth. There are news stories on it and I include only a couple of them (https://globalnews.ca/news/9778957/ne..., https://www.reuters.com/world/america... ). Sadly, there are more. So, where on a Federal level, they want to protect children on the Provincial level they are passing laws which counter that. I assume Federal law has to do with scientific reasoning which has shown that children who are from LGBTQ2S+ groups are more likely to be abused https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... and thus their safety should be paramount. In this case alone, we are seeing the disparity between Rule OF Law and Rule BY Law and it sets a battle ground under which some children may well face abuse for being a member of a minority. In Canada we have recourse to Human Rights which is already beginning and there are other cases https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canad... . Which do we want to teach our children? These mixed messages are creating confusion aren’t they? Rule BY Law is one of the things that literally can make it unacceptable for minority kids to have a say in their own life, they are not respected and it is part of the Stochastic Terrorism https://www.dictionary.com/browse/sto... hierarchy by making these kids more vulnerable and forcing teachers to police the students. When did we make teachers into police? You see the effects in all spheres of the race, religion, orientation, etc battles going on around the world. The laws are being made by Rule BY Law (political points to score and taken on the backs of various minorities) rather than Rule OF Law toward which would be aimed at making life better and laws to fit for a better and safer democracy. Instead of protecting people, we are exposing them to potential abuse. This is one of the downsides to trusting in the process of the Rule Of Law being met. Sometimes the Rule By Law is what happens and we’re left going through Human Rights process. There needs to be more educated and informed work by the powers that be and not cave to the pressure of the political group of the moment.
As Confucius is suggested to have said, “To rule a country of a thousand chariots, there must be reverent attention to business, and sincerity; economy in expenditure, and love for men [all humans]; and the employment of the people at the proper seasons.” The political systems have been developed in harmony with perfect theoretical concepts. As with all theoretical concepts, the reality is flawed, misused and made into something that we no longer recognize when it becomes solely the realm of the humans, political and earthly spheres. The purity of the concept becomes muddied by the myriad of different voices trying to change it to fit their personal agendas. It becomes Rule By Law rather than Rule Of Law. How do we change it? Do people change? Is it time to have a seasonal change so that we can teach our children to see a better future and a better world? What will this change look like and how can we make it happen? How do we get to that point of Rule Of Law rather than Rule By Law? Well, this is where it gets to be complicated; there are limited options for what you can do. One of the things is provide proper and well thought out information. Another is do your civic duty and vote. Use your voice to speak for those who are not given a voice. Respect each other and others. If politically minded, get into politics and change it from the inside. These are things that I leave you with listeners and readers. I only know that we can’t change it alone and the world will have to work in harmony to reach this place. Whether you agree with me or not, I hope it makes you think. Thanks for listening to my podcast and/or reading my blog post and thanks for your interest in A & J PEI Treasures! Keep watching because we’re always working on something. Thank you!
