I went into "A Sport and a Pastime" fully expecting it to be my favorite book read in 2023. Unfortunately, I DNF'ed at 30%. I enjoyed the writing style and the dreary milieu descriptions, but the plot and characters felt inconsequential. Dean was so random, and the narrator is flatly boring. The prose dabs in and out of stream of consciousness, which I found rather unreliable and a bit annoying. I skimmed through the end of the book and found some interesting pages, but life is too short to waste on slogging through pointless internal ramblings to get to a few good pages.
