The Last

Christ once said to his disciples “The first shall me made last and the last shall be first.” (Matthew 20:16) On the surface it sounds simple. The downcast of society will have a seat of honor at God’s table whereas as the elites of our day will eat the scraps- if they are allowed near the table at all.

But, who is the last?

Most would say that the vulnerable are the last-the homeless or children, which is likely true. Many of these individuals would qualify for that title, but I posit that “the last” are not always immediately obvious. Some are people you would never guess are last. They can be found by looking at how society treats them. If society treats them with vitriol, then you can be pretty sure you are dealing with “the last.”

Take Donald Trump. At first glance, he seems powerful. He’s a billionaire and successful businessman. He’s been in movies, produced television shows, even been the President of the United States. Yet I tell you with confidence he is the last because of how society treats him.

He’s been impeached twice for things other presidents have done openly. He’s recently been arrested, had his mugshot taken, and the list goes on and on. Make no mistake. He is the last, and provided he is a repentant soul, he will have a seat at Christ’s table.

Who else is the last? Many patriotic Americans are. They’re called privileged and spoken about with scorn in our media. The South and Middle America are often referred to as incestuous and backwards. These people may have founded a country everyone and their dog wants to move to, but presently they are the last.

The same can be said of Christians. We are attacked daily. Our religion is mocked, our beliefs called archaic and bigoted. Sometimes we are even the victims of violence. We are the last, and provided we stay, the course we shall be made the first.

So, look for the last in your world. Find them. Get to know them. Serve them. Ask yourself if you are one of them and if not, how you can become one of them.

How can you become such a unique and worthwhile person that your very existence pisses off societal elites?

Become the last in this world so you can be first in the next. Maybe you will even remind a few along the way that their status as first is short lived and fleeting.
