Finding Strength to Carry On: A Memoir

New book examines how to rebound from life’s darkest days.

The unexpected death of her husband Don changed Barbara Hubbartt’s life in a flash. A second death of her youngest child, Douglas, brought catastrophic heartbreak. Barbara Hubbartt Gruening tells her story in “Finding Strength to Carry On: A Memoir.” This book tells the story in her own words, providing:
- vivid descriptions of dramatic life changing events,
- belief in the power of God providing hope to carry on,
- humorous family stories that reveal the human experience, and
- Barbara’s valuable life lessons which helped her to overcome adversity.
Drawn from the written journals in which Barbara detailed her private thoughts to get through each day. By sharing her anecdotes, Barbara hopes that others can overcome life’s adversities. Barbara said, “I began a storybook life with a handsome man and a family of three sons. But then my husband had a stroke at 42 and a second stroke took him way too soon. Then my youngest son Douglas died at the tender age of 23. I had to find strength to carry on. My belief in God together with my volunteer involvement in family and various group activities helped me to find constructive outlets turning anguish into accomplishment. My life began to turn around. Some years later I met another man, a widower. Our relationship grew into a new and fulfilling life.”
Drawn from her written journals, this is Barbara’s story, a journey out of anguish detailing how she found the strength to carry on. By telling her story – in the form of a memoir of experiences and anecdotes, Barbara tries to help others overcome adversities that may occur in life’s journey.
