There are skills in high school football and talent, but it’s not exactly a craft.

27. Twilight: Play to Live – Charles Veley

I was only concerned with high school football in terms of having to show up for marching band because we were the half-time show. Thus ends my concern. However, I am aware that some people get things like scholarships and enjoy said game. Fine. Joey Prescott needs a way into college and a good future because his family has to move all the time and his dad apparently has a gambling problem, so, there goes any hope of a college fund. Joey’s a senior, so it’s his last chance. But Norwich, in the US and therefore free of Alan Partridge sadly, is under the spell of some dude named Mr. Wynn who wants to be called “Willie Boy” for an insidious reason once you get to know him.

All the main players and jerks seem to be fine with the whole “this town is all about high school football” arrangement, but Joey thinks it’s strange. And the cheerleaders who don’t go in for the football team are also of interest to him. See, there’s an unofficial rule that the team gets whatever they want from the cheerleaders, like, if they ask one out even if she has another boyfriend, she will go out with that team member. Joey both does and doesn’t want to use this on Bonnie, whose boyfriend then somehow goes missing to “prep school.” Only an outsider like Joey and Mr. Minos the new geometry teacher think this endless succession of winning is wrong and not a good way to keep a town going. They’re the weirdos, mister.

Ozymandias and Danger Crumples want to break free of this laundry basket; it’s exactly the same as breaking out from under a spell of endless winning. Exactly.

Ace climbing the stairs is a good example of what guinea pigs actually achieve athletically. She was quite a winner at stairs.
