With the ongoing chatter about “one language, one nation, one people” in India, certain historical facts pop to mind.

Countries that actually have a common language, like English, are not at all as united as some people think.

Wasn’t it only 247 years ago when America fought the British to gain independence? English was and is the common tongue in both those nations. Didn’t stop them from breaking up, though.

Why, it didn’t even stop thousands of people sailing from Europe (from nations with one common language in each) and Britain to go colonize the ‘New World’. They drove almost every Native American tribe already living there to extinction.

Strangely enough, in India, the phrase ‘united we stand, divided we fall’ has long since updated itself to ‘different we stand, similar we fall’.

So it's safe to say, “one language, one nation, one people” sounds good only on paper. Just be careful not to sign it.
