Geeks with Empathy

It’s hard to believe that two years ago this week Minding the Machines was released. Months of writing, deleting, rearranging, tweaking, and meetings with the publishing team were over and I naively thought the work was done.

That was followed by the hardest part - dozens of speaking engagements, podcasts, shameless self-promotion, and the complete abuse of my inner introvert. It was also met with some great new relationships, new clients, and a deep respect for people who work in the literary space.

One key learning after the publication of the book is that at the root of almost every technical problem is an issue of empathy. I have spoken with hundreds of practitioners since the publication of MTM, and without exception the thing that I’ve found that holds us back is building meaningful connections with our stakeholders and clients.

With that, I’m very happy to share that I have been working on a new book, titled Geeks with Empathy. This will be an ethnographic study into the bizarre world of geeks, combined with practical advice for how to leverage empathy in your personal and professional life. I strongly believe if we can realign our orientation from technology to people, we will not only be more successful, but more personally fulfilled.

I’m anticipating a publication date in Q1 of 2024 and will provide updates as it reaches the final stages. My sincere appreciation to all the collaborators behind the scenes supporting me along the process. I’m very excited to put this out there and continue to assault my introversion.
