What Makes a Great Villain? Your Checklist for Writing a Good Bad Guy

Nothing makes your hero more heroic than a worthy opponent.

So don’t shortchange your villain. Spend every bit as much time crafting him as you do your lead character, if you want your story to work.

(Though I will use male pronouns throughout, this applies equally if your main character is a heroine or your villain is female.)

Agreed. Apart from Nicolae, one of my favorite villains is Stephen King's Annie Wilkes. King gives us just a snippet of her back story, and I heard, in a Misery Commentary, on Youtube, that Kathy Bates and Rob Reiner wrote a back story for the character.
If you should talk to Mr. King again, maybe hint about a Misery Prequel, where we learn about what made Annie into the classic crazo she was. I mean, PLEASE! If that woman's mood swings could be turned into an amusement park ride, I wonder how many people would line up the adventure.
