I love going down rabbit holes! As I was writing my newsletter, I looked up "wet your appetite vs whet your appetite." I thought it was whet, but I wasn't positive. Turns out that there is a word for this kind of confusion! Eggcorn. Eggcorn = saying or spelling a word or phrase incorrectly because you hear it incorrectly. Here are some common ones:Expresso instead of espressoEx-patriot instead of expatriateWonderlust instead of wanderlustChester drawers instead of chest of drawersDeep seeded instead of deep seatedDoggy dog instead of dog eat dogChock it up instead of chalk it upOld wise tale instead of old wives' taleSafety deposit box instead of safe deposit box (I've been saying this one wrong my entire life!)
Then, I learned something even cooler. There is a different word for song lyrics and poetry that is misunderstood: Mondegreen. You know, when you think you hear, "Blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche" but they are really singing "revved up like a deuce."
And this is why my kids call me Google Mom!
