EXCERPT

They continued and arrived in Flagstaff, late at night. The motel looked just like the Bates Motel. Michael hurriedly got Ron into the room, which faced the Grand Canyon. Michael had reservations so they were able to get into the room quickly. Michael went outside, standing on the porch, feeling a significant pressure on his chest.

“The air is not meshing well with the smoke in my lungs,” Michael said to himself. When he got back to the room, Ron was already sleeping with Rhonda on his leg.

The next morning, Michael got up early and woke Ron telling him to wash his face. He then took Ron to the door of their room, opened it, and walked outside. Ron just gaped at the sight of the Grand Canyon. The colors and the sun bouncing off these jagged cliffs looked like cut out mountains from a magazine.

He turned to Michael, he said, “It looks like a painted drop! Not real. How was this created? What
events led to this? I understand all the bullshit you learn in Earth Science, but this is so much more.”

Michael noticed a little tear in Ron’s eye, shed for the beauty, for the nature that Michael had always talked to him about.

“Those guys in New England, those Transcendentalists, they knew the answer, this is God. This is it! I know we will leave but I will never forget this, and the emotions it moves in me.”

“Alright I have a surprise. We are off to the North Rim of the Canyon. We are taking an entire day tour of the North Rim on the Katibah trail, exploring the inner canyons. We will travel on mules.”

Q&A With….

Tell us about you as a person.
I take pride in my honesty, my intellect, and my proactive stand in life

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Walt Whitman; he knew how to commune with nature

What’s the story behind your latest book?
Interesting. The story was based on my life, but grew to a more universal man. Men are much more alienated and never had the completion of love with a friend he might and should with a woman. I went from book one to now book three attempting to discover this in the universal man. I say men just want love, sharing, and companionship and maybe he could find that in another male, not as a lover but as an unconditional male bond.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their latest book?
Be as proactive as possible and hold your novel as if it was the Bible telling a story with a message

List 5 things on your bucket list.
I started to implement this. I saved enough money to take my son, my daughter, my granddaughter, my son’s and my friend Jamison on a trip tracing all the stops that I made that make up the main chapters in Reflections. Next, Europe. We renewed our passports. I want to go to France, Greece, and Italy. I’ve been several times, but I want to go with my son and his friend Jamison. The trip is for them as well as myself—find a place to rest my head. Maybe Saint-Michel saying goodbye but there might be another novel or two in me. I would stay in Paris as the exile I always was.

Any final thoughts?
Love nature, your dog or cat and the people around you (don’t make that list too long). Write with passion and find an editor that gets you like I did. Love God, not in church but in the mountains and the flowers. That is God. The God in churches is ok if they love and are not afraid what is outside.

Also, read my book. I believe it is very special. I have some answers to questions that are in all our minds. Make the discovery that I did. Thanks.
