Colander

Picture When you use your kitchen colander, do you ever think of fishing? The word colander has its origins in Latin colum (wicker fishing trap or net, strainer), a word of uncertain origin.

Colander, a vessel perforated with little holes to allow liquid to run off, appears in English in the mid-14th century as coloundour, from Latin colatorium (strainer), colare (to strain), and colum.
