The Fearless Capt. Edna Pitkin

One of Mae Foley’s friends in the Women’s Police Reserve was Capt. Edna Pitkin.

Edna was a Broadway regular, and Mae thought her a bit impulsive.

Black and white photograph of Captain Edna Pitkin standing in front of the police precinct holding her hand in the air as if making a pledge or promise.

One day she told Mae that she’d learned the Department wanted to test out a new bulletproof vest. She volunteered to wear the 12-lb vest and let the inventor shoot her with a .38 police pistol.

“Didn’t even tickle,”  she proclaimed.

Mae was flabbergasted.

Newspaper clipping from October 8 1922 issue of The Buffalo Times of Buffalo New York depicting Leo Krause firing a gun a close range at Captain Edna Pitkin wearing a bulletproof vest. The headline reads,

Mae Foley and Capt. Edna Pitkin are but two of the fascinating women detailed in my upcoming book, The Girls Who Fought Crime. It releases on August 8 and is available for pre-order wherever you buy books!
