Creating a Home Wherever You Live: Tips for Downsizing in Your 60s
Moving to a new home can be exciting, especially if you’re downsizing in your 60s and looking for a fresh start. However, it’s not uncommon to feel a little lost in your new surroundings and struggle to feel at home. As someone who has worked in design for almost 40 years, I’ve helped many people arrange their homes so that they feel comfortable and at ease. However, creating a feeling of home isn’t just about design. It’s about creating an atmosphere that reflects who you are and what makes you happy.
What Does Home Mean to You?The first step in creating a home wherever you live is to define what home means to you. Think about what makes you feel safe, secure, comfortable, and happy. Maybe it’s a cozy and warm atmosphere or a sense of organization and peace. Whatever it is, make a list of everything that makes you feel at home.
Ask. Why You Don’t Feel at Home in Your New Home? The next step is to ask yourself why you don’t feel at home in your new surroundings. Is it because you miss familiar faces and places, or because you’re overwhelmed with unpacking and organizing? Maybe you’re attached to your old house and the memories it holds. Whatever the reason, identifying why you feel the way you do is an important step in creating a home wherever you are.
Once you’ve identified the reasons why you don’t feel at home, you can take steps to change that (you can even do it on a budget). Get out and meet your neighbors, explore your new area, and make new friends. Invite people into your home, even if it’s just for something casual like coffee or tea. Surround yourself with things that make you happy, such as family photos, books, and other items that hold special memories.
Make it Personal and Fill the SensesPersonalize your home to fill up all the senses. One of the most effective ways to personalize your home is to engage all your senses, creating a space that not only looks good but feels good too. This can be done by incorporating a range of sensory experiences that evoke positive feelings, memories, and emotions. Here are three ideas to help you engage more than your eyes.
You can start by displaying happy memories through photos, books, or other sentimental items. These could be family photos, travel souvenirs, or objects that have special meaning to you. By doing so, you create a visual story of your life that can help to ground you in the present moment and bring a sense of comfort and familiarity.Next, consider adding elements that engage your sense of smell, such as lighting candles or using soaps with scents that you love. These simple additions can instantly transform your home into a welcoming oasis, helping you to relax and unwind after a long day. Finally, don’t forget to add cozy elements such as soft throws and pillows that make you feel comfortable. These can be functional and decorative, adding a touch of warmth and softness to your space while creating an inviting ambiance that makes you feel right at home. By incorporating these three simple steps, you can personalize your home in a way that is meaningful, authentic, and deeply satisfying.Remember, home is not just a place, it’s a feeling that you create. Whether your new home is large or small, it can become your home if you take the time to create an atmosphere that reflects who you are and what makes you happy.
Out with the Old, In with the YouDon’t spend your time longing for your old home, but instead grow where you’re planted and make your new home your own. Create new memories that will last a lifetime and embrace the spirit of excitement and adventure that comes with starting over.
Moving to a new home can be challenging, but it’s also an opportunity to create a new beginning. With a little time and effort, you can create a home wherever you live that reflects the best parts of who you are.
