We’ve Been Given So Much!
This past weekend as I was vacuuming at work, I was listening to a lesson about Abraham. I can’t remember exactly what the teacher said about Abraham as I moved across the hallway from the boardroom to the smaller discussion room and started moving chairs away from the table, but I do remember this verse popping into my head.
“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”
Luke 12:48b (NIV)
I don’t know about you, but in my life, I’ve often heard this verse used in teachings about using your talents and possessions for God.
But on Saturday, it hit differently as I compared Abraham and myself.
First, consider Abraham.
He was called by God to follow wherever God led him and to be the father of many nations.
God called.
He went.
He made mistakes along the way.
He learned about God and how different the true God was from all the other gods he had known in his life.
And he grew as he learned.
He didn’t have a Bible.
He didn’t even have a scroll in a clay jar at a synagogue.
He had very little aside from the bits and pieces he was learning about God as God revealed Himself to him.
Basically, he had faith and that was it.
Now, look at the image I made for this post.

In it there is a printed Bible, a phone app Bible with just about any translation of the Bible you could want to read (in multiple languages), and a tablet that contains a host of Bible-related ebooks.
Compare that with what Abraham had.
Who has the most revelation about God and His plan? Abraham? or Us?
I mean, think about it…
We know that Sarah was able to conceive in her old age.
We know that God was going to provide the sacrifice to take Isaac’s place even before Abraham was asked to make a sacrifice.
We know that Jesus would eventually be sent to earth through Israel to bless the whole earth by offering a final sacrifice for sin that can be claimed by all to restore the relationship with God that was lost in the Garden of Eden.
Abraham didn’t know any of that as he was living through parts of it and looking forward to other parts.
We have been given SOOOOO much!
And for many of us, we’ve also been allowed to live in places where reading and owning the Bible and books about the Bible is allowed. We live in places where living out what God wants us to do is (or has been) “easy” compared to other regions and eras.
Let me say it again: We have been given SOOOOO much!
With this in mind, we must evaluate how we have used what we have been given. I don’t think we can read Luke 12:48 without doing so.
Have we truly used what we’ve been given well? Or have we just taken it for granted and have only looked at or thought about it on certain occasions – like Sunday mornings?
I’m not sure I’ve used what I’ve been given as well as I should have. In fact, I’m just going to say I haven’t.
I pray I will do better as I move forward so that when Christ returns He will say “Well done.” Will you pray the same with me?
