Joey Lucchesi pitches seven shutout innings after long absence from MLB as Mets crush Giants

SAN FRANCISCO — Joey Lucchesi just needed to keep the Mets in Friday’s game until mid-inning to accomplish his mission.

The Mets got the bonus package.

The southpaw, appearing in a major league game for the first time in nearly two years, now holds the accolade of pitching the team’s best game of the season with his seven shutout innings in Win 7 -0 from the Mets over the Giants. at Oracle Park.

Lucchesi not only became the first Mets starting pitcher to record a seventh-inning out this season, he placed an exclamation on his performance as he retired the side in frame.

In total, he struck out nine and allowed four hits and two walks on 97 pitches.

The solid outing provided a break for the Mets bullpen, which had received extended work in the previous two games.

The Mets won for the seventh time in eight games on this West Coast trip and won eight of nine games overall.

During the trip, they beat their opponents 53-29.

Lucchesi, 29, was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of the game to fill Carlos Carrasco’s rotation spot.

Carrasco was placed on the injured list earlier in the week with a bone chip in his right elbow and given a cortisone injection.

His return will depend on his ability to manage the elbow discomfort.

But Lucchesi became the latest piece of starting pitching depth – joining Tylor Megill, David Peterson and Jose Butto – to show he can hold his own.

Lucchesi last pitched in the major leagues for the Mets in June 2021 before undergoing Tommy John surgery that cost him last season as he recovered.

The substitutes excelled with Justin Verlander and Jose Quintana on the IL, in addition to Carrasco.

And the Mets will be without Max Scherzer for his next start, as he is serving a 10-game suspension for violating MLB rules on foreign substances.

This Tuesday departure could go to Butto, but only if he is recalled to replace a player placed on the IL.

Butto otherwise has to spend 15 days from last Monday when he was optioned to Syracuse as a minor.

Pete Alonso’s 10th major-league home run of the season and second in as many games gave Lucchesi a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning.

Alonso went over the fence into center field against Anthony DeSclafani after a pitching error helped extend the inning.

Jeff McNeil hit a firecracker in front of the plate that receiver Joey Bart threw, allowing Luis Guillorme to score from second. Guillorme’s second single of the evening had launched the rally.

Alonso came back in the ninth with a two-run single, giving him four RBIs for the second straight game.

Daniel Vogelbach followed with an RBI single that brought the Mets’ final run.

Guillorme delivered a second-inning RBI single for the first inning of the game.

Vogelbach and Brett Baty also delivered singles in the inning.

Lucchesi received help from his defense, which converted two early double plays to help the southpaw out of trouble.

In the first, Lucchesi brought in JD Davis to hit in a late-inning double play after Wilmer Flores’ brace and a walk to Darin Ruf.

In the third, Flores threw a late-inning double play after Brett Wisely’s first single.

In the sixth, Thairo Estrada hit a top-inning single against Lucchesi, but Flores hit on another double play, the Giants’ third of the night.
