Evening is coming at Portland Row. George has nipped out to the corner shop to get some doughnuts, forgetting to shut the door behind him. Lucy is in the basement, practising with her rapier. Lockwood is reluctantly finishing some paperwork in the library. In a few minutes, they’ll meet in the kitchen and put the kettle on. Just for a moment, the house is quiet, the hall is still.
