Remembering Lance Sijans Birthday

April 13th is the birthday of Lance P Sijan (MOH), my close friend and combat buddy who was shot down over enemy territory two days after me. Lance was badly injured when he landed on the side of a karst (solid rock mountain). He evaded capture for 46 days crawling on his back. He was eventually captured and died in the Hanoi Hilton prison (Hoa Loa) where I was being held.

Lance was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his courageous resistance. He was a great guyvery tough, strong character, and very kind.

We remember Lance today and most days. This painting of him by the great artist Maxine McCaffrey hangs in Arnold Hall and she gave me the black and white sketch of it that hangs in my office library. Happy Birthday Lance.
