General Antoine Eugène Alfred Chanzy, from a print dated 1892.

Chanzy was a general in the Army of the Loire during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and was noted for excellent command and service. After the war, he was appointed Governor of Algeria (1873). In 1879, he was nominated for the presidency of the French Republic.
