Review of a AI writing assistant

AI Assistance Programs for Writers

AI assistance programs for writers are becoming increasingly popular. They can help with tasks such as grammar and spelling checks, sentence structure suggestions, and even content generation. These programs are designed to save time and improve the quality of writing, but it is important for writers to still use their own judgement and creativity when using them.

Using an AI writing assistance program for writing has its pros and cons. On the one hand, it can help writers save time and effort by providing suggestions for grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. It can also offer content generation capabilities that can help writers overcome writer's block. On the other hand, some writers may become overly reliant on these programs, which can hinder their creativity and originality. Additionally, some AI assistance programs may not be perfect and may offer incorrect suggestions, which can lead to errors in the writing. Therefore, it's important for writers to use these programs as a tool rather than as a replacement for their own judgement and creativity. AI-assisted writing programs can also cause problems when it comes to the writer's voice.

Today, I will review QuillBot, an AI-assisted writing program. I will cover what it is, how it works, the differences between the free and pro versions, the capabilities of the web extension for both versions, and the pros and cons of using QuillBot.

QuillBot, specifically, is an excellent example of an AI writing assistance program that can benefit writers in a number of ways. QuillBot reached out to me after reading my blog post "Tools to Boost Your Writer's Life" (https://shirleycrow078.wixsite.com/authorscrow/post/tools-to-boost-your-writers-life) and offered me the opportunity to use their program. As someone who is always looking to improve their writing, I was thrilled to work with the QuillBot team and see what their program could do.

While using QuillBot, I was impressed by its capabilities as an indie author, blogger, Medium web article writer, and writing group manager.

Blog

I’ve highlighted the tools I’ve used from the site and the Chrome extension.

This is a view of the home page after signing up for the free version. On the side, there are toggles for the Paraphraser, Grammar Checker, Plagiarism Checker, Co-Writer, Summarizer, Citation Generator, Translator, Premium version, Extensions, Help, and Contact.

I want to show you how I’ve been using the site the most by clicking on the "Co-Writer” toggle.

You can choose between a blank project or use an Essay, Blog, or Research paper template. I've mostly used this program to write blog posts and articles for Medium under my other pen name, Ann Crow. Since NaNoWriMo has started on April 1st I’ve used the program to summarize my scenes for when I go to revise this novel later.

Free Version vs. Premium VersionFree Version:

125 words in the paraphraser, standard and fluency modes, 3 synonym options, 1 Freeze word of phrase, 1200 words in the summarizer and no credit card is required.

Premium Version:

unlimited words, more modes, 4 synonym options, unlimited freeze words and phrases, 6000 words in the summarizer, faster processing speed, advanced grammar rewrites, compare modes (desktop only), plagiarism checker up to 20 pages a month, tone detection, paraphraser history.

Web extension

is helpful in helping when in other locations than the Quillbot desktop site.

ConsCons: The free version of QuillBot has limited capabilities compared to the premium version. Some suggestions made by QuillBot may not be accurate, which can lead to errors in the writing. Not every grammar checker is correct or in line with creative and voice choices an author might make. Becoming overly reliant on QuillBot can hinder a writer's creativity and originality.Pros: QuillBot can save writers time and effort by providing suggestions for grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. It offers content generation capabilities that can help writers overcome writer's block. The program is available in both free and premium versions, as well as a web extension. It can be helpful for writers looking to improve their writing. My overall impression of Quillbot.

I enjoy Quillbot even though it isn’t my go to when drafting my novel. I’m surprised how easy it is to use these AI tools but they are tools and shouldn’t be used to replace a writers creativity and originality. Try it out for yourself and see how it works for you.
