It is Still Hours

before daylight

I’ve been working

for a while and ready

for a break:

Maybe solitaire or spades,

another cup of black coffee

and a little ginger ale.

I am sure

you don’t mind

as you sleep on the couch

and I tap away here

while the great dog

stretches out beside you

and the electric fire warms

against the forty degrees.
