Lord of the Liminal Space: Voice

I’m in a liminal space in 2023 – that means it’s an in-between space arching over what was and what will be. As I recover from my divorce in 2022 and many other losses, I’m seeing this year as a liminal space, and I am acknowledging God as the Lord over it all.

This year, I’m starting something new: an unedited prayer poem every day, written in just five minutes. I’m writing it based on the names of God I find in my One Year Bible readings.

Lord of the Liminal Space – Voice

Based on this reading from the One Year Bible for February 5. I also refer to 1 Kings 19 in this prayer-poem.

 

O Lord

your voice

is powerful enough

to stir mountains

split cedars

strip forests

and shake the wilderness.

May I take comfort

knowing

your voice

is a lightning strike

against all

who are unholy.

 

Your voice

is also

the whisper

after the hurricane

earthquake

and fire.

The quiet voice

I hear most clearly

in the midnight hours

speaking to my heart

so close

as if you were

in the flesh

beside me.

 

Your voice

affirms

comforts

guides

corrects

and encourages

as I fall back asleep.

 

In the morning

while I ponder

what you spoke

so tenderly to me

may I always remember

the One who draws so close

is also the Almighty

whose voice echoes

above the sea

and thunders

with glory.
