Weird Wednesday Feb 1: Cartoons and Temperature

Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

OK, then when water boils at 100 degrees C, then the Fahrenheit equivalent should be 132, right? ( 32 + 100 more degrees). Nope. 212 F.

OK, then if (212 – 32) /100 = 1.8, then there are 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees in each Celsius degree. Easy peasy. So when it is a comfortable 25 C, it is also 45 F (25 x 1.8), right? Nope. The would make it 77 F.

Wha? Lets go the other way. -10 C would be 18 F (10 X 1.8 —wait, we already figured out that ratio doesn’t work, so let’s just skip to where the two scales sync up: -40.

Weird? You bet. Time to refill my mug with two gills of coffee.
