"This gaff is bloody creepy enough," Detective Sergeant Isidoros Cam muttered as he strode through the front door of Warszawski Taxidermy. With his battered fedora and rumpled trenchcoat, the basset-faced DS looked like a cross between Columbo and Dick Tracy.

"Looks like the place has been abandoned for decades," twenty-four-year-old Detective Constable Breandán Gracia Zelenka noted.

"Not quite, Fresh Meat," Auer countered with a knowing grin. "The truck is a newer model, not more than five years old. I'll bet you five quid that there's current mail, though the occupant may not have opened it for a spell."

Lieutenant Theresa Landvik, a seasoned American ex-pat who had been with the Crouch End division of Scotland Yard for 34 years, was a small, wiry woman in her early sixties who looked like she might blow away in a strong wind, but her co-workers knew that she was far tougher than she appeared. She turned her piercing violet-blue gaze on her subordinates.
