I'm a Cheap Date!

Carly Icon

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this here before but I don't drink. My main reason is my migraines. It's just not worth it. There's no alcoholic drink I like enough to go through the agony of a drink induced headache. This means, even if my husband drinks an expensive Scotch, I'm a cheap date. I'm kinda proud of this. It's become my claim to fame and I really don't care. I mean I get my share of – "not EVER?" or "Not even a glass of wine with dinner?" And really? No. Give me a diet Coke and I'm happy. A room of drunk people? I'm STILL OK. I can have fun. It's all good.

That said, there are two drinks I do like. I like beer. Always have. And I like cheap Passover wine. Good old Manischewitz wine. $5.99 for a small bottle. I LOVE it. So this year I decided to indulge. I drank mine and I drank Elijah the Prophet's glass. Yep.

A few hours later, I'm watching TV with my daughter and I say, boy do I have a splitting headache that won't go away. And she says, with the wisdom of a 16 year old, "Mom, YOU DRANK WINE."

Which means the second night of the holiday, I abstained. And I was sad.

Is there anything you love and can't have for health or other reasons? And how do you feel after you indulge?

Kelli I know your pain. I'm allergic to Caffeine. It really messes with me so I don't drink it. I used to try and push the envelope and dive in and have a frothy delicious frozen coffee a couple times a week and then switched to Chai (which still has caffeine) but eventually I had to just walk away entirely because as delicious as it is it's just not worth the heart palpatations, rash, the racing mind, the anxiety drinking it causes. Although on occasion I do partake in the occasional tea; hot or iced but that's only once in a blue moon.

Erin Members of the migraine club unite!

I'm not allergic to any foods (that I know of) but if I take the antibiotic Tertracycline my throat tends to close up, which I really don't enjoy.

My migraines are triggered by: the weather (hello barometer in my brain), hormones, crying too hard, not getting enough sleep, etc etc . . .

I could, yes, but Decaf is not actually caffeine free- so it would just depend on how much caffeine is left in the beverage and if my body decided to be ubersensitive to it that day - which does happen. :) I'm actually alright with going without - it was hard at first but it doesn't really faze me anymore.

Tricia Douglas I would love to be allergic to ice cream! the smell of fresh bread! oatmeal cookies! new babies! I could go on and on, but really, I'm not allergic to anything! I feel left out a little.

message 9: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Edmonds My migraines come from the weather, stress, and oddly enough sometimes not enough caffeine or too much caffeine (there never is a middle ground is there?)

My weakness is soup and some spicy foods but unforunately one day I'm going to have to stop with the spices because I get extreme acid reflux and heart burn.

Nothing helps but a ton of sleep or medications and sometimes not even either.

What a drag :(

Carly Phillips I hear you, Alyssa. Too much caffeine, not enough. Too much sleep, not enough. Ugh.

Tricia, if I could be allergic to the foods I overeat, me and my scale would be happy!

Tiffany I know I am a day late and a dollar short, however I just returned from Punta Cana, DR. I usually cannot drink out at bars because what people don't know is that many "dive bars" have fruit flies that sometimes congregate in liquor bottles that have sat for a period of time. With that said when those bottles sit uncovered for a period of time mold will form within the bottles (fruit flies are my gauge) and cause mold and I am severely allergic to mold. So we tend to only drink more popular bars where they go through a lot of liquor in short periods of time or I stick to popular liquors such as RUM in DR. My husband and I own a bar locally so I find it to be a terrible habit of covering and dumping liquors that sit a while.

Carly Phillips I think you just taught me NEVER to drink in any bar LOL! Kidding. Thanks for the heads up. Hope your vacay was fantastic!

Susannah Carleton No alcohol, for the same reason you don't drink it: migraines. No green tea, either, because I'm allergic to it.
