Mount Monadnock; the stomping ground for the New England mountaineer. My home mountain, so to speak. I hadn't been atop it in almost FIVE years, which was remarkable. I guess that had to change.
On an extremely hot late July day, JS and I took off for the Marlboro trail, one of my favorite approaches because it is typically quiet. I think that the heat chased people away because we only saw a few people on the way up.
Though it was over 90 degrees when we left home, the trailhead was in the low 80s and proved to be quite nice, especially when we broke treeline and the winds started howling. It felt like an air conditioner.
The Marlboro Trail is in the woods for about half of its length, and then above treeline for the rest. It has one of the coolest scrambles on the entire mountain, as seen below.
As we tagged the summit, we serendipitously ran into my friend Krista and her brother and boyfriend just as they were touching the top from the other side of the mountain. Small freaking world.
A lovely day on Monadnock as always--and I can assure that it won't be 5 years before my next romp up the rock pile.
