I Want To Be A Helper
“18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 (NIV).
Growing up I loved, and at times hated, working in the garden with my dad. One year, dad asked me to dig 150 postholes that were a foot and a half deep to plant tomatoes. It was a lot of work. But in the end, the hard work paid off, and we had some great-tasting food to eat and drink. Adam and Eve spent a lot of time in the garden as well.
God created Eve to be a helper in the garden of Adam’s life. The word helper reminds me of the words helpful, beneficial, and good. Adam and Eve’s job as a married couple was to find ways to make the garden and their lives better. We all know that the actions of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 did not make their family better. They introduced sin and death into the world.
There is a principle in the word of God called Sowing and Reaping. Galatians 6:7-9 describes this very important principle. It states, “7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (NIV).
Galatians 5:19-20 helps to understand the difference between the flesh and Spirit. It states. “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.” (NIV).
What kind of things are you planting in the garden of your marriage and life? Are they kind, helpful, and good, or bad, and destructive? It is easy in the heat of an argument to say or do things we don’t mean. But remember, they plant bad seeds in our marriage and lives. It is easy to let anger get the best of you and temptation is all around. But God’s way leads to better things.
Life and marriage may not be a rose Garden, but if you plant a rose, in time one will come. Don’t give up or lose heart, and continue to do things God’s way, and trust that your married life will get better. Remember 1 Corinthians 2:9 which states, “ But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (NIV). Our actions in tough times can help or hurt our marriage. I want them to help and see more of God in the Garden of my marriage and life. I WANT TO BE A HELPER. Lord help, my words, and actions glorify you. I thank you for your amazing grace and recommit my life to you.
