The Murderer's Daughters Teaser: 7 Lines

"You're it!"

I've been tagged by Jenna Blum, NYT Bestselling author of the haunting, page-turning novels: Those Who Save Us and The Stormchasers. According to the rules of this new book game, one must:

1. Go to the 77th page of your WIP or latest book.

2. Count down 7 lines.

3. Copy the 7 sentences that follow, and post them.

4. Tag 7 other authors.

The scene below is from The Murderer's Daughters: a story of sisters who (at the ages of six and ten, witness their father kill their mother.  In the scene below, the sisters are being driven from their orphanage to the cemetery where their grandmother will be buried, and the older sister, Lulu (now 14,) has just pinched her younger sister, Merry (now 10)

from The Murderer's Daughters:

Uncle Irving turned around. "You girls okay?" Mama would've said his black suit looked older and uglier than dirt. When Uncle Irving had come to tell us Grandma was dead, I didn't even remember he was Grandmother's brother until he told me. I'd hardly ever seen him or his daughter, Cousin Budgie, who wasn't a cousin age, but more of an aunt age.

Cousin Budgie's shoulders tightened, but she kept quiet.  When they'd come over to pick us up, she'd barely kissed us, just offered her stupid cheek like some sort of fat prize.

Yes, there are 8 sentences above—but I'm far to obsessive to leave a dangling line.

So, I'm going to tag a mix of incredibly talented writer-friends from online and real life: Do you want to play, guys? If you don't feel like putting up an entire blog post, feel free to post your seven lines here! (But you're on your own for tagging other authors)

Amy Hatvaney: (Outside the Lines)

Sarah Pekkenan: (These Girls)

M.J. Rose: (The Book of Lost Fragrances)

Ernessa Carter: (32 Candles)

Juliette Fay: (Deep Down True)

Carleen Brice: (Orange Mint & Honey)

Kate Ledger (Remedies)
