On a wedding weekend near Hartford, CT, I was able to get out to for a run before heading home. The River Highlands State Park area on the Connecticut River is a solid spot for hiking, running, and mountain biking. The trail system is generous with its elevation changes and trail footing, so it makes for a good and challenging day.
I started my loop by heading down to the river and then made my way along its fringe to maximize my mileage. Because a lot of mountain bikers are on this trail, it is flattened out quite a bit, but it isn’t too eroded yet like some overused trails. I appreciated this given that I’m still working back from my ankle injury.
Although this park doesn’t have miles and miles or trails, it packs in a good punch if you are willing to run trails that are more suited for mountain biking in order to get some more miles in (windy and weaving). Nonetheless, this is a worthy spot to visit if you’re in the area.
