We had a cat for 17 years, and he was generally a very good cat. But when the Christmas tree was up, and he was in his evening "witching hour," he would amble up under the tree, pretending he was minding his own business. My parents would tell him "No," and he would hear them, but then he'd suddenly lay back his ears, make a lightning swipe at an ornament, and bolt for cover. He never climbed the tree (it was artificial), but he couldn't resist temptation, even in front of witnesses.
