In the past, dating back to films like The Boys in the Band, straight actors would almost always play gayface. In the film, Philadelphia, that was released in the 90s, Tom Hanks played gayface and he did a wonderful job. However, Tom Hanks recently made a statement that he would not play gayface nowadays because that would be wrong. It would be cultural appropriation.
