‘The Burn List’ was inspired by feelings that I’m sure many of us have experienced as we make art while simultaneously trying to earn a living. The poem is about the commodification of art and asks how much of ourselves we lose as we try to make work that’s true to us but also popular with our audiences. The line is between total authenticity and earning a living can sometimes be difficult to find, and that’s what this poem is all about.
