Alan Shayne with George Cukor.
Mr. Shayne started his career as an actor on Broadway and in television before eventually becoming president of Warner Brothers Television, from which he retired in 1986. During his tenure there, he was responsible for launching such hit shows as "Wonder Woman," "Dukes of Hazard," "Alice," and "Night Court," among others. He began his career in television with David Susskind's production company, after heading the Broadway casting office for David Merrick. Both struggled, however, to keep their personal lives from affecting their professional lives, as homosexuality was an inevitable death sentence for one's career. Though Mr. Sunshine admitted it was easier for him as an artist, it was not so for Mr. Shayne. They recount a story when it was made clear by their employers that such a "lifestyle" must be kept quiet.
