Shawn Wickersheim I really like this blog post, and the topic. I've been reading Richard Stark's Parker series lately. Parker definitely fits the character type you're talking about. You might check out Joe Abercrombie's books too - especially Best Served Cold. The female mercenary out for revenge is definitely a hard-core, kick-ass character. Even my own character, Mallor, walks a fine line between anti-hero and non-hero. Good luck with your writing!
