Raw (2016)

A young woman, studying to be a vet, develops a craving for human flesh.

Thoughts: Mixes eroticism with cannibalism in its examination of female identity and social pressures. Provocative on multiple levels but tonally flat. The latter cements its unique artistic ascetic but at the cost of muting the viewer’s emotional connection to the film.

The Sadness (2019)

A young couple trying to reunite amid a city ravaged by a plague that turns its victims into deranged, bloodthirsty sadists.

Thoughts: Superior practical effects distinguish this zombie (adjacent) film from the rest. Some nice subtle commentary on the ongoing pandemic but, sometimes, the gore is so over the top that it works against it. Loses half a point for that silly eye socket scene.

Tumbbad (2018)

A man and his son encounter a legendary demon while searching a decaying castle for hidden treasure in 19th-century India.

Thoughts: Visually rich and refreshingly unique, this Indian gothic tale mines some spooky mythology in its exploration of greed, family, and colonialism. Well worth a watch.
