Quick and Easy Guide to Spam Comments

I’ve been responding to quite a few queries over the last few weeks about comments left on blog posts. How to determine a “real” comment. “Should I respond to a comment that looks real?”

As I’ve posted several times recently, there has been an uptick in hacking activity in the website world recently. Many of the experts will point to a number of worldwide events as triggers. Regardless of what is causing an uptick in this stupidness, we all need to be as safety minded as possible.

Aside from safety and not accidentally approving a comment that is actually spam, what danger is there from spam comments? other than them taking up a bit of space, there is no real danger. But as I often say, if spammers would get a real job, they could make a million dollars with their persistence. Instead, they are just a pain in the butt.

I am going to give several examples of spam comments – how to decide they are spam – things to look for.

Example #1

Looking at Example #1 above – many of us are used to seeing this type of comment waiting for moderation. It is clearly spam – from the “Name” being “free porno dirty little whore” to the clear offer of porn in the body of the comment, this is not the type of comment you want to be displayed to your readers. Sometimes these sorts of comments are accompanied by a variety of hyperlinks to porn websites. This type of comment is easy to identify.

Although porn comments are pretty easy to identify as spam, some of the next examples aren’t as clear.

Let’s look at another example.

Example #2

Spam comments often don’t make sense or use English words that we wouldn’t normally use. In the example above, we wouldn’t “clutch” an rss feed. We might “grab” an rss feed. The wording aside, people who subscribe to blogs using the rss feed know what they are doing and don’t need help from you. They have chosen to follow blog in this fashion and are experienced. In this example, I’m not sure if they are trying to see if you will help them or just being a pain in the butt

Example #3

Example #3 above is another example of odd language usage. Writing isn’t described as fastidious by typical English speakers. I posted the example above as it is typical of nonsense type comments. I have had people question whether they should be more understanding of someone who is not fluent in English. The answer is no – this is a spam comment and needs to be marked as spam – not approved for your readers to see.

Example #4

Example #4 is another example of nonsense. This isn’t just someone trying to comment that doesn’t speak English well – this is spam.

Example #5

This last example is one who has fooled several authors I work with and I’ve seen it posted on many site lately. I’m not sure the point of this type of comment other than to be a pain in the butt. However, the giveaway that helps you mark it as spam is the name listed as “click here” and the URL listed for blockchain.

I hope this little review helps you identify spam comments and prevents you from falling into the trap of approving questionable comments.
