You may not be interested in Clarence Thomas, but Clarence Thomas is interested in you

In The New Yorker, I take on Clarence Thomas’s contributions to this last term of the Supreme Court:

The most powerful Black man in America, Thomas is also our most symptomatic public intellectual, setting out a terrifying vision of race, rights, and violence that’s fast becoming a description of everyday life. It’s no longer a matter of Clarence Thomas’s Court. Increasingly, it’s Clarence Thomas’s America.

I focus on the abortion and gun rights decisions, and try to limn their meaning for our moment.

In the face of a state that won’t do anything about climate change, economic inequality, personal debt, voting rights, and women’s rights, it’s no wonder that an increasing portion of the population, across all racesgenders, and beliefs, have determined that the best way to protect themselves, and their families, is by getting a gun. A society with no rights, no freedoms, except for those you claim yourself—this was always Thomas’s vision of the world. Now, for many Americans, it is the only one available.

You can read the whole piece here.

Back to reading about Hayek, Vienna, and the Austrian School.

Virginia Arthur I really disagree with "deep" readings of Thomas's behavior. There is nothing deep about this man. I continue to wonder why everyone ignores the circumstances under which he was appointed, blatant sexual harassment of Anita Hill (and other women) then appallingly, the same circumstance for Kavanaugh only one degree more severe-rape. We have two men on the Extreme Court who at best, harassed women, at worst, raped them, and sorry, I can't get past THIS. I can't even get to the point where I wonder about their "approach", philosophy, reading of the Constitution. It's all sht in my opinion at least with these two. If we are to appoint judges without integrity, who lie during their confirmations, Thomas, whose wife was complicit with the KILLINGS on January 6, how valid then are their "rulings" and "readings" of the Constitution? I don't give a shit. I think what motivates them is anger and psychological problems they carried into the job. I think they are psychologically damaged people. I dream of both of them getting trapped on a elevator with Sigmund Freud--these two men with sexually problematic behaviors that then want to control the sexuality of everyone in their nation and criminalize women. These are damaged men. And I will never get past this and they need to be impeached.
